Breast Reduction surgery is typically for women with large heavy breasts usually with associated sagging, who desire a smaller, lifted and reshaped breast. Large breasts can interfere with normal daily activities and make it difficult to exercise. In severe cases the weight of large heavy breasts can lead to certain medical problems.
The goal of breast reduction surgery is to give the woman a more attractive body contour with smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.
Breast reduction is done under light general anesthesia as an outpatient in our surgery center, or in certain cases in the hospital. The surgery removes breast tissue and skin from the breasts making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. The breast is also lifted and reshaped in addition to being made smaller. This surgery can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple.
Incisions are made around the pigmented nipple-areola complex and extend vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast. The nipple-areola is repositioned upward to the desired location. The excess breast tissue and skin is removed and the breast is reshaped around the nipple areola. The incisions are covered with a light dressing and the breasts are placed in a surgical bra or wrap that will support them during initial healing.
Most patients have minor pain and discomfort that is easily controlled with medication. Much of the swelling and bruising (if any) usually resolves in the first 10 to 14 days following the surgery. Allow about a week before returning to office work, and 4 weeks before resuming vigorous exercise.
Over the first few weeks the breasts will change shape and settle to a more natural position. The final shape and position of the breast will usually be apparent by 4- 6 months after surgery. The scars are usually pink as they heal and mature and usually fade by 12 months following the surgery and become less obvious. The scars that remain are easily completely covered by a bra or bathing suit, and the scars will not prevent you from wearing low-cut tops.
