Facelift Surgery

Face Lift

Overview

Over time, skin begins to wrinkle and sag as a result of age, sun exposure and genetic predisposition. Excess skin typically becomes prominent at the lower cheeks and neck many times making one look older than they feel. Facelift surgery is designed to restore a more youthful appearance and to improve these visible signs of aging. It involves tasteful and natural repositioning of facial tissues as well as the removal of any excess skin without the unattractive "pulled tight" look.

A facelift is frequently performed in conjunction with other facial procedures including eyelid surgery and /or a browlift to create an overall rejuvenation of the face.

The Procedure

The facelift procedure is one of the most complex surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons requiring a perfect blend of meticulous technical skill, artistry, and finesse to create the perfect outcome without the tell tale signs of surgery.

Every facelift procedure is tailored to each individual to exactly address the specific problem areas and tissues that each patient needs corrected. Typically, an incision is made inside the hairline at the temple, in front of the ear, then around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending in the scalp area. Sagging facial tissues are repositioned and tightened and any excess skin is removed. Often times, a small incision is also made under the chin to provide access for Dr. Tjelmeland to tighten the neck muscles (technically known as a platysmaplasty) and to suction any excess fat that may be present in this area.

Austin facelift surgeon, Dr. Tjelmeland performs the facelift procedure using a harmonic scalpel. This state of the art instrumentation uses ultrasonic technology to seal blood vessels and lymphatics and to elevate the skin and soft tissues without the tissue damage caused by the burning of the traditional electrocautery. The introduction of this instrument has dramatically reduced postoperative swelling and bruising and has significantly reduced recovery time. Facelifts are performed on an outpatient basis in our surgical center under either sedation "twilight anesthesia" or light general anesthesia.

Recovery: What to Expect

The evening after surgery, you may have a dressing wrapped around your head, and surgical drains may be present. Dr. Tjelmeland will see you the next day after surgery and the dressing and drains will be removed. Pain is typically very minimal and most patients have the temporary sensation of "tightness". This discomfort is easily controlled with pain medication. With the use of the harmonic scalpel swelling is minimal and bruising is very minimal or completely absent in many patients.

You may return to work in 7- 14 days, depending on your type of work. Exercise and more vigorous physical activity can usually be resumed after about 3 weeks.
