male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia

Overview

Gynecomastia Before and After photosExcessive male breast tissue, or gynecomastia is a very common problem affecting an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. One or both breasts may be affected and can be caused by excess fat, normal glandular breast tissue, or a combination of both. Heredity, hormonal changes, aging, certain drugs and medical problems are all factors that can contribute or exacerbate gynecomastia. This condition can cause many men to be self-conscious, and removing this excess breast tissue can restore a more masculine physique and give a renewed feeling of self-confidence.

The Procedure

Gynecomastia correction is usually performed under light general anesthesia on an outpatient basis in our surgical facility. The surgical approach for each individual is tailored to the specific characteristics of each patient's breast tissue. This breast tissue can be reduced with direct surgical excision, ultrasonic assisted liposuction, or a combination of both methods. In severe cases, skin excision may be necessary as well. Typically the entire procedure can be performed through a small incision resulting in minimal scarring. In many cases, ultrasonic assisted liposuction alone using VASER Liposelection® may be used. With either approach, the result is a firmer, flatter chest and a better contour.

Recovery: What to Expect

Postoperative discomfort is easily managed with pain medication, and most patients return to work between 3 - 5 days. A compression garment will be worn for 4-6 weeks following surgery, which will help suppress the swelling and help contour the chest. Exercise can begin usually between two and three weeks.
